It came after the IZH-54, wich was technically a copy of some pre World War II German hunting shotgun (Merkel? Shul? I don't know). The 54 had very decent fit and finnish, it had a Greener-lock, it was expensive. Soviet leadership decided to make something cheaper and simpler, but in acceptable quality. That became the IZH-58, a very decent all Soviet/Russian designed and made shotgun for the hunters. You can still find them for sale on the used gun market of Hungary, usually in 16gauge (sometimes in 12 gauge too). My friend asked me - qualified forester we were in the same school, but I learned water management - he got his firearms license in the school. But he do not know much about guns. So he asked me to go with him and buy a gun. He wanted a side by side, a classic one. I told him to get an IZH-58. I found a perfect one, with streight English style stock and deep engraving on the receiver (engraving like in the video). A very nice gun in a very nice condition. The gun is 16 gauge one but he can find decent ammo for it, not hard to get that here in Hungary.

What matters most is how well it was cared for.
