To clarify, I'm not saying this is (a) a perfect book or (b) even a book you should spend your hard-earned cash on. It has some really useful components that I'd recommend, but WotC doesn't really need any more money, if you know what I mean.

"A lot of you have never actually read the Dungeon Master's Guide." OMG I got a shoutout on TalesArcane! (Seriously, thanks for letting me know because I had no idea how good the tables were).

โ€œA lot of you have never actually read the dungeon master guide, and it showsโ€ฆโ€ is what I was expecting for a second ๐Ÿ˜‚ haha itโ€™s true - great short!

I'm so glad you said this. I read so many questions and comments about in various places and the answer is almost always in the DMG! It's not perfect but it's an amazing resource for anyone serious about DM ing

I love the random tables. Haven't used them much at the table, but they're great to gain a little "DM INSPIRATION"

I love the various rules for running a much grittier game.

What's not commonly known is that Appendices A-C are pulled almost word for word from the 1e AD&D DMG. Likewise much of the content in Ch. 9 - The Dungeon Master's Workshop that can be used to make 5e more engaging is pulled from 1e AD&D. Overall, the appendices and Ch. 9 make 5e a much more challenging and engaging game.

Imagine making the dungeon as you go, just random suspicious rolls.

I like having the resource, but what I've found is that things are way easier to make up on the spot using the same format than roll and lookup. Even using the tables to pick from rather than roll from. But it really helps if you're just blocked on creativity or want something truely random.

The DMG is AWFUL. I got through the first like FOUR PAGES while trying to get my brain set for a gaming coming up in the next couple months - and then I read the stupid "The world is new. What if there are no ancient legends and your players are going to be the ancient legends" and NOW I HAVE A WHOLE NEW CAMPAIGN IDEA. the DMG is a terrible influence. (This is sarcasm and a joke)
