My take is this... Learn on an electronic keyer with paddles. It's easier to form the characters and the timing is set right. Also, your wrist with thank you. After that, you still should at least be able to send slowly with a hand key. It is a connection with our past as radio operators, but also a good skill to know for a dire emergency if your electronic key here goes kaput and you need to establish communications.

If you want to contest at 40WPM then electronic is the way to go. I prefer to chat at 15 - 20 WPM and I love my cootie hand key. It's easier on the arm than the straight key but you still manually create all the characters.

When i get around to learning morse, i will start with straight key and manual, just for no other reason than it would be hugely satisifying !
