Mike I do not have a suggestion except maybe if you sleep at a Holiday Inn Express you will wake up with the answer! LOL

I would suggest finding a used Supermax 13” brush sander with a Tynex head, it will leave you a textured surface without having any splinters, new ones are $4,500 but I think it will give you the finish you want.

Some brands in that price range would work for your project, but then long term you will start to have issues. Since you are growing your business, I would highly suggest looking at Baileigh Drum Sander - (SD-174). They are having a Memorial Weekend sale, and it will get it closer, but just over your budget. You will have a great functioning machine that can power through most anything you throw at it and last decades.

Mike, I bought a Jet drum sander 25 years ago, and it is still going strong. Whatever you go with you will need dust collection! I would hit the boards with a planer....lightly and finish off with the drum sander. If you want the rustic but not finished look. Good luck.

Grizzly would be my choice. They make good value machines for a good price.

Mike, Grizzly Industries makes a couple of overhead drum sanders for right around a thousand dollars.

No sander recommendations, but I do have experience with hanging rough siding. Do yourself a favor and get it at least half way smooth, otherwise it is a royal PITA to keep clean & dust free. Good luck with the project!

I would recommend a Random-orbital sander instead of a drum sander.

Put a door from the outside into the hallway so you won't have to go thru the cabin when you have a code brown episode!! LOL

Mike I would use a electric powered orbital variable speed 6” round sander w/ 80 grit paper , you can just glide over those boards

Mike, You might consider going to a local commercial cabinet shop or business that rents their machinery or hire by the hour to sand your lumber...I don't know if that would be cheaper in the lo g run for you... In Portland, Oregon, there is a shop that does just that...they have a very large sander (48" wide) that you can bring your material in and they'll sand it for you (of course for their rental fee)...I don't know if you have anything like that where you live... Good luck!

Can’t help you with the drum sander, but I am so excited to see you work on the cabin.

Get a good router and do a half lap it will keep you from getting big gaps when put together

Yes drum sand it. But you really need to ship lap your red pine. All you need is a simple tablesaw with a dado blade. 3/4 in and half the thickness. When it's drying, you won't see your black tarpaper behind it. That's the way to go.

I have a Super Max 16-32 drum sander, Excellent machine. With any drum sander, you will need a good dust extractor or the dust will gum up the sand paper. There are many brands but I hear good things about Grizzly or Jet. Amazing how many people don't hear the words, "I don't want to plane it" or "I want a good DRUM sander!" HaHa

If you want to leave a natural tecture and have varying thinksness as others have mentioned, an option may be the Makita 9741 Wheel Brush Sander. It's smallish but has some amazing potential with different wheels depending on the effect you want.
