They also have a ceiling of like 48k feet or so for shooting aircraft. They don't physically look impressive but they really are.

....because it's cheaper than launching missiles at everything.

With how the military polices brass on the ranges, I’m surprised they don’t keep the shell casings for these

If only they could have a capability like the Italian improved 76mm Super Rapido with Strales System with DART/Volcano ammunition.
The DART ammo is anti aircraft/missile capability guided round like an anti aircraft missile but in shell form, they also have a 76mm land attack Volcano round that is GPS guided with extended range.
Otto is creating both DART and Volcano versions for their 127mm/5 inch guns.
BAE need to give these two capabilities DART and Volcano as an upgrade to their existing Mk 45 guns.

The Navy should have standardized its guns to the Army's 155mm rounds. Five inches is 127mm. 155mm is 6.01 inches. There would be a lot more firepower and a lot of money to be saved.

70 pound shells are cool and all... but not as cool as 2800 pound shells

The 62 calibre version has been available for quite some time. Australia's 3 hobart class have them, the japanese frigates and destroyers, south korea along with updated ticonderoga's and more modern arleigh burkes.

I'm so glad that the Mk45 is finally getting some attention. My dad is the QPM at BAE for the entirety of the Mk45 program. Orders are booked, its a reliable system that the USN and all of our allies want their hands on.

Five inch guns aren't big guns. 127 mm is a field artillery caliber. Iowa Class Battleships had 406 mm guns.

Calling a 5in gun a "big gun" just seems humorous to me...

What I'd really like to hear on top of this is the Navy's version, assuming they have one, a similar round it's a RAM Jet based munition with a range from 145 miles standard to 185 in testing. And have that round available for our Naval units.

I did Naval Gunfire. It is still just a 105mm round. The Marine Corps should demand for 8 inch guns as a minimum for Naval Gunfire. It is great when you call 1 gun, one zero rounds fire for effect and you get it!!! It just isn't fun when the rounds skip and go in land and up a hill by 2 km.

Guns are integral to naval ships still. You cannot justify every single thing to be destroyed with a half a million dollar missile. Especially drone swarms. So shells are still necessary.

I will say this, the battleship Wisconsin 5in guns, our crews out shoot all the new auto guns on the new ships during the Gulf war. We had weekly shooting against other ships and had a steak and lobster dinner paid for by the other ships.
