This Idea goes back to the old short hood hand crank welders. On cold mornings, one would get one welder started and use that welder to jump off the rest.
It's suppose to be (+) POS to (-) and (-)NEG to (+)POS on the leads, because of the way the current flows through the generator for proper rotation to turn the engine. It's just like a Starter/ Generator on the real old Lawn tractors such as one with a Wisconsin engine or Kohler like a Wheel horse. Old, old school stuff.

I have a bad habit of leveling my turned on to accessory mode and it kills my battery. I jump start it with my ol Lincoln Ranger…
I’ve also used my Ranger to get home when my alternator went out buy leveling it running on while hooked up to my battery

That probably doesn't work with millers,hobarts. Only good old dc Lincoln welders. I cut my teeth in on Lincoln welders but welding heavy equipment and everything in between but pipe, I've switched to a big blue 600amp.

DC to DC Machine.

Use DC generator welder to charge batteries on anything. Welder off, attach positive to positive batt stud, neg. to neg. stud. Attach DVOM to battery. Set welder to lowest setting. Start welder. Gradually increase welder amps while watching volt meter, increase until between 13 -15 volts. Good batteries will allow 100+ amps while in 13 - 15 volt range. Bad batteries will climb above 15 volts at low amperage, say 45 amps.
Ounce you get the hang of it you can tell good and bad batteries by the amount of amps the batteries will take while staying in the 13 - 15 volt range.
40+ years truck road service here.
This will not work for inverter welders, it will blow circuit boards.
