Yes, a fuller discussion how to know if art is stolen or otherwise may be be legally owned, would be helpful when deciding on purchases.

Buying looted artifacts is one thing, but for a publication to intentionally cover it up is disguting

Looting has always absolutely disgusted me, but after I recently took an archaeology class in college I have come to hate it even more. There's so much information that get's lost when an archeological find is taken out of it's context: exact dating (which is often done by shards of organic matter found nearby in the soil), location (was it found in a temple, palace and what can that tell us about it?) etc. The fact that these ignorant rich thieves simply stick a metal rod in them, mount them on a marble base and decorate their ugly McMansions with (what atleast used to be) significant cultural objects just doesn't make sense to me. Especially when there's so much perfectly fine non-looted art out there!

The irony is that in 2008, Cambodia awarded (Knighted) him the Royal Order of Monisaraphon. The market will eventually decide how quickly restitution occurs.

Now you see it, now you don't. 25 years ago you used to be able to buy Khmer art and big Khmer statues in Bangkok and maybe still can. I don't know why Cambodian officials don't check out some of the big Bangkok antique sellers.

What if you were gifted a Khmer artifact from the Angkor Temple by a Khmer diplomat, do you have to give it backs?
