Death toll rises to 72 as powerful quake devastates Cebu

A powerful earthquake struck the central Philippine province of Cebu on Tuesday night, leaving at least 72 people dead and more than 200 injured, the Office of Civil Defence (OCD) confirmed on Wednesday.

The worst-hit area is Bogo City, where survivors are contending with widespread power outages, destroyed homes and overstretched medical facilities. Many residents have been forced to sleep outdoors in tents or cars, gathering in open spaces to receive relief supplies as night fell.

Across affected neighbourhoods, houses were severely damaged as terraces crumbled and fragile wooden and sheet-metal structures were flattened. Some residents remained inside their damaged homes despite the risk of collapse.

Fear of aftershocks prompted the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Bogo to evacuate its wards, moving bed-ridden patients into the car park where they received intravenous drips and oxygen. The hospital has also been serving as a coordination hub for rescue operations and casualty reports.

By early Wednesday morning, military trucks carrying food, water and emergency supplies had arrived in the stricken areas, providing critical aid as search and rescue efforts continued.
