The Five Nights at Freddy’s story begins in the early days of animatronic-themed family restaurants. In the late 1970s or early 1980s, two men — William Afton and Henry Emily — co-founded Fredbear’s Family Diner, a small establishment that featured animatronic mascots. Among these were Fredbear and Spring Bonnie, two early “springlock†animatronics that could double as suits worn by employees. Tragedy struck when Henry’s young daughter was killed outside the diner, an incident that later led to her spirit possessing a puppet-like animatronic known as The Puppet. This marked the beginning of a dark legacy in which the boundary between life and technology would repeatedly be crossed.
William Afton, who operated under the cover of being an inventor and businessman, began to experiment with the idea of life persisting after death. Motivated either by madness, grief, or something more twisted, Afton lured several children to the back rooms of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza — a successor to Fredbear’s — and murdered them. Their bodies were never found, but strange odors and fluid leaks began to come from the animatronics. Unknown to the public, the children’s souls had inhabited the very suits meant to entertain them, and the animatronics began to act erratically, driven by the spirits trapped inside. The Puppet, now a vessel for Henry’s daughter, became a guiding force for these lost souls, giving them life and vengeance.
Around this time, Afton’s own family began to fall apart. His youngest son, known only as the Crying Child, was tormented by his older brother and developed a deep fear of the animatronics. On his birthday, during a cruel prank at Fredbear’s, his brother pushed him too close to Fredbear’s animatronic mouth, which closed with a fatal snap. This event, known as the Bite of ’83, left the child either comatose or dead — a trauma that marked a turning point in Afton’s descent. Some believe this child’s consciousness also found its way into the digital or supernatural realm, continuing the cycle of haunting.
Despite the tragedies, the franchise continued to grow. By 1987, a new location with updated "Toy" animatronics opened, along with security systems and facial recognition meant to prevent future tragedies. However, history repeated itself. Afton continued his spree of murders, even disguising himself in one of the suits to bypass security. During this period, another incident occurred — the Bite of ’87 — in which an animatronic severely injured an employee, possibly damaging their frontal lobe. This led to the animatronics being limited to night activity, setting the stage for the events of the original game.
In the first Five Nights at Freddy’s game, set in the early 1990s, a security guard — likely Michael Afton, William’s son — begins working the night shift at a now-declining Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Each night, he’s stalked by the haunted animatronics. They don’t recognize humans at night and assume he's an endoskeleton without a suit, so they attempt to force him into one, killing him in the process. The location eventually closes down, but the evil within the animatronics persists.
William Afton, while exploring his creations or perhaps trying to reclaim remnant — a mysterious substance tied to the souls in the animatronics — enters the now-abandoned pizzeria. There, he is attacked by the spirits of the children he murdered. In a panic, he hides inside a springlock suit — Spring Bonnie — but due to moisture and poor design, the suit malfunctions and the mechanisms snap shut, crushing him inside. His body dies, but his spirit survives. Now a rotting corpse fused into the suit, he becomes known as Springtrap, a grotesque new monster fueled by hate and remnant.
Years later, his son Michael takes center stage. Determined to undo his father's evil legacy, Michael works his way through various Fazbear-related jobs. In Sister Location, he is sent to an underground facility housing advanced “Funtime†animatronics — creations of his father designed specifically to lure and capture children. Among them is Circus Baby, possessed by Michael’s sister Elizabeth, who was killed by the animatronic years earlier. Over time, the animatronics merge into a collective being known as Ennard and use Michael's body as a disguise to escape. Though Michael is killed in the process, something keeps him going — possibly remnant — and he continues his mission, even as his body decays.
Eventually, Michael and Henry work together to bring an end to the horror. Henry builds one final pizzeria — a trap meant to lure all the haunted entities, including Springtrap, Scrap Baby (Elizabeth), Molten Freddy (the remnants of Ennard), and The Puppet. In Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator, all are gathered, and Henry ignites the building in a cleansing fire. He sacrifices himself and encourages Michael to rest, believing their souls can finally be free. However, William Afton’s story doesn’t end there.
In the digital age, remnants of Afton survive in the code of old games. In FNaF: Help Wanted, a VR game meant to clean up Fazbear’s image, a glitch emerges — Glitchtrap — a digital consciousness resembling Afton. He attempts to escape the game by possessing a player, possibly Vanessa, who later becomes known as Vanny. This marks a new phase in the FNaF timeline, one where the terror of Afton spreads beyond the physical world into software and artificial intelligence.
This culminates in Security Breach, set in the massive Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex, a neon-lit monument to a corporation that refuses to die. Here, a boy named Gregory and a reprogrammed Glamrock Freddy work together to survive the night against Vanny and other corrupted animatronics. Deep beneath the Pizzaplex, an old evil stirs — a decaying Afton, possibly reborn through technology, remnants, or digital virus, now called Burntrap. The cycle of death and possession seems endless, as new characters and locations uncover deeper layers of the original horror.
Despite the attempts to destroy him, William Afton — in physical, spiritual, and digital form — continues to haunt the world of Freddy Fazbear’s. Through games, souls, AI, and trauma, the legacy of one man’s evil persists, tangled in a story where the line between human, machine, and ghost is long since erased.
