Lost Spirits of Spinalonga: Greece’s Isle of Isolation
Spinalonga Island, located off the coast of Crete in Greece, is a place with a haunting atmosphere that has been the center of numerous dramatic events throughout history. The island is especially known as a leper colony used for the isolation of leprosy patients between 1903 and 1957. At that time, leprosy was an incurable disease, and patients were forced into complete isolation from society. For many, Spinalonga became their final destination; once sent to the island, most never returned.

Most of the structures on the island consist of remnants from an old Ottoman fortress and buildings constructed for the leper colony. The crumbling walls, abandoned rooms, church, hospital ruins, and decaying belongings give the impression of a place where time has stood still. These abandoned buildings and the island’s desolate nature evoke a mystical and melancholic feeling upon entering Spinalonga.

The island’s eerie silence, combined with its ruinous appearance and the wind that blows especially at night, has led to rumors of paranormal activity. Some visitors claim to have seen the ghosts of former leprosy patients wandering the island or heard sounds of crying and moaning. These tales have inspired numerous ghost stories and mysteries, leading many to refer to Spinalonga as a “ghost island.”
