I mean, I am French so maybe I'm biased, but isn't saying "hello", "goodbye", "thanks" etc. super normal?

Oh... And we never ever say "sacrebleu". We have moved on from the 16th century.

Not only in France. I am french and i'm living in Germany. It's normal to say "Guten Tag", "Bitte/Danke" and "Auf Wiedersehen".
(Hello, Please/Thank you, Good Bye). 😊

French Canadian here on my first week in France I approached a security guard at a mall saying Hey then asked him a question about directions. He was offended that I didn't say bonjour first and never helped me I was like well it's true that the french are rude. I learned the hard way that you absolutely need to start a question with bonjour if you hope to get service.

When they are out of France, they often leave their courtesy and politeness at home

And don't forget to say merci and pardon at least twice every phrase...

so what is the proper response to them telling you Americans are garbage right after they politely ask where you're from?

BS. Paris is terrible and they have proper reasons, tourists are insufferable (I was a tourist but changed my way of travelling after being there)

Wrong. I have C2 fluency in French. Know very well about their culture and all. Yet, I was a victim of arrogance while I was there. Restaurant waiters not respecting me, strangers giving me that side eye because of my brown color, etc. They are racist and rude

...Umm I said Bonjour when I entered the stores initially and the staff started to speak to me in French real fast (when I obviously looked very very touristy/ and prob had horribly broken pronunciation). When it happened too many times, I just stopped doing so bc they probably wanted me to stop? Idk. Just said hello afterwards and had no trouble (p.s. people were always nice to me tho)
