This is a short, animated visual proof demonstrating that the area of a regular dodecagon inscribed in the unit circle has an area of exactly 3.

This animation is based on a standard way of computing areas of regular polygons by triangulating and using trigonometry.

Area for a circle with Radius 1:
Pi times r(squared)
3.14 times 1 times 1
=3.14

The dodecagon's area ends up being 3, which is only 0.14 less than Pi.

The Dodecagon visually fills MOST of the circle, so this is a good confirmation that the calculation is correct.

One fun thing to think about is that the SPACE between the Dodecagon and the Circle is literally Pi without the 3.

Another evaluation comes from decomposing a regular decagon into squares and triangles around a hexagon, or 6 squares and 12 equilateral triangles, all with the same side length. In combination with this argument, you get an evaluation of the side length of an inscribed decagon. If s=2 sin(15 degrees), then (6+3sqrt3)s^2=3 so sin(15 degrees) = sqrt(2-sqrt(3))/2.

It’s weird how it’s close to pi and looks like a circle

Right, 3 is a pretty good approximation of pi.
