My feeling is that this was a joke in the moment, possibly with a hope that Matt will take it and run with it. And that Matt will likely take it and make it something either delightful or terrifying, either of which I would be 100% here for.

I’m convinced just like Nott’s fear of water, FCG, fear of birds is improv making its way into back story. It felt like imrpov to me when it came up in play.

My theory is that Dancer isn't very nice. While she was working on the unawakened aeormaton she let birds sit on it and poop. She kept letting it happen after FCG woke up, so he would wake up every morning covered in bird poop. Instead of blaming Dancer for her callous behaviour (because he's too 'nice' for that) he blamed the birds. I like this theory because Sam will have a great time describing how he was covered in poo when FCG finally remembers.

I know they made a big deal of FCG having one ocular module down when they were looking for a one-eyed monster, but that feels awkward to me. He disassociated and saw himself in third person? Nah.
I have a creeping feeling the one-eyed monster he remembers could just be Ruidus? What if it’s a moon flare that triggered him that time with Dancer. He remembers a big eye, but could it not be the red moon in the sky?
This could also be the missing link between FCG and the moon you were looking for.

I think it will have a deeper meaning, going back to FCG earliest time on Aeor during the Calamity. Maybe he was attacked by a literal bird monster or even a monstrous/fiendish eisfurra (have we ever seen FCG interact directly with an eisfurra though ?)

I don't think his fear is a rational one in the sense he was attacked, more in the fact that he doesn't know who attacked his group and he somehow convinced himself it was a bird.
For all we know it could be tied to the Ravenqueen holding dominion over the dead.

Bird definitely freaked him out and gave him all the stress points and that’s what made him attack his party but he only remembers the big bird attacking before he blacked out and went all murder bot

Odds are the fear is probably mostly random and will let Matt run with it for emotional damage
