Male gift-giving spiders present females with prey wrapped in their own silk before mating. The silk contains a pheromone 'love potion' that makes the female more likely to accept the gift, and the male.

Males of the gift-giving spider Pisaura mirabilis silk-wrap prey and offer it to females at mating. Washing the silk cover makes gifts less attractive to females compared to naturally wrapped gifts, suggesting presence of silk-borne chemicals that stimulate female gift acceptance, and hence mating. These chemicals may indicate male quality, or be used to manipulate female behaviour beyond their interests.
