"Sea of Japan" is the only name internationally agreed in 1923. After independence, South Korea had been silent until 1992 and abruptly started to insist that the name of the sea is "East Sea".
But it is ridiculous name, because, It is not even "EAST" for Japan.
It is a part of by-product of anti-japan and nationalism education in South Korea.

In Germany we call it „Japanisches Meer“ in English Its “Japanese Sea”

If the Japanese archipelago did not exist, the sea would be the Pacific Ocean, not the East Sea, so the name Sea of Japan makes sense.
