Ah, yes. "Work sets you free".

Politics runs through everything. You can't escape it. You can not say that you "avoid politics and focus on empathy and the good life" because there are forces who don't want people to have that. Abandoning the political arena means that those preaching that "work equals value" narrative will gain political power and make that the guiding ethos. So embrace your empathy. Embrace saying you want everyone to have a good life. Force the opposition to defend cruelty and selfishness.

I worked for five years in constant pain, losing feeling in my legs, miserable with advancing multiple sclerosis because of this mentality. My wife finally convinced me to quit and apply for disability. That mindset would’ve killed me.

"Sin is treating people as things, including yourself." Terry Pratchett. That's the second best* definition of sin I've encountered and that's just what this "protestant work ethic" is. *The best is "an imaginary disease designed to sell you an imaginary cure".

Everything is political because joker bottom text we live in a society. Saying we should have empathy and have a nice life is INTENSELY political, because there are people who dont believe that, who would deny us that.

The Protestant Work ethic can ravage the sense of self-worth of people who didn't perform well in school – I have ADHD and I have had to go to therapy to decouple my inability to focus from the idea that I have morally failed myself and my family

Protestant work "ethics" is sometimes very dehumanizing.

Really comes down to what we value. If you have power and wealth, you will value that which gives you more. If you have no power and wealth you will value what gives you power and wealth. If you have no knowledge, you will value that which gives you knowledge. So on and so forth. This is why we never have the same values of anything unless we are living the same way or under the same conditions.

Living shitty life for the benefit of your boss does sound like living a shitty life for the benefit of a bad God.

I went to a Con in Austin a few years ago, and Troy Baker was the speaker. He started his talk by looking out at us and just said "You are enough." ... And let that sit for a minute. I believed that about other people, but I'd never tried to believe it about myself. It was the start of valuing myself, and life has gotten much better since I started that process.

Something i found fascinating about the Protestant work ethic is how hard it's pushed in the Railway Series or Thomas the tank engine

Just as bad is trying to take vacation without doing anything. Can't just take a couch day, you have to go somewhere. Do, Do, Do that's America.

Work is another way of saying I’m willing to help. To not be willing to help is selfishness. That’s why working is good for the soul. Work so you may have something to give your brother.

Also consider how the respect we give to different kinds of work varies and how we can politically and socially dehumanize and disenfranchise workers in education, manual labor, and the military, just to name a few examples.

My 26 yo daughter is now disabled. How effed up that she feels less than cuz she doesn't have a job. Competition is tuff when you can't walk or think quickly. She doesn't have to work but feels like a loser on top of her brain injury.

Like attaching the value of a person to work, thinking deeply about it, how is it that we have that we have fully liberated humanity from slavery when society is force to devalue who can't work or at least subjecting everyone into backbreaking labor as if that's the only way to value people. Work that is own specifically by you at your own disposal and time. This is why I turn to marxism, it's about liberating work for the individual, we're work is valued in a society, free from the constraints of material scarcity or ownership of others.

How can you tell I mean really tell that they need more workers? Outlawing abortion and lowering the age that labor can start are good signs.. Next sign; high school is lessened as a goal.

We value art but not the artist. Some people love working for a company. Some people want to work for themselves. We shouldn't have a problem with letting everyone do what they want. We have all of the tools we need to make that happen but we have to end unlimited individual wealth. If you have 100 mil+ and it's not enough, it never will be. And you probably need to get some therapy.
