The oldest musical instrument, a neanderthal bone flute made from a thighbone of a young cave bear, is between 50,000 and 60,000 years old.

It has been discovered in modern Slovenia, in the Divje Babe cave near the town of Cerkno. It was found along with other Neanderthal stone tools from the same time period.

The flute had four holes, two of which are entirely preserved. The position and the distribution of holes aren't coincidental. Experiments, CT scans, preserved length (11.4 centimeters) and the mouthpiece all indicate that the bone flute was made with the intention of musical expression. The holes were made by first making a dent with a pointed stone tool and then pierced with a bone strike.

The find is important because it highly undermines the perception of Neanderthals as primitive hominids unable of art and cultural progress. In recent years more traces of artistic expressions of Neanderthals have been found across Europe particularly in Spain, Italy and Germany.

The bone flute is on display in the National Museum of Slovenia.

I believe music existed far beyond this period and there is proof that will dispel all presently known phenomena if we can extend the human story without insane politics, and governmental greed and selfish individual power.

Wow, that’s amazing.

I get the bone is very old, but just wondering how they Carbon dated the drilled holes? The holes which don’t exist

In 2015 a study was conducted which concluded that the holes were not made by neandethals but by hyenas, the flute has also been more accurately dated to around 35000 years ago

Only one found. I don't accept this as evidence of a flute. Neanderthals were primitive and not human. Humans formed societies but Neanderthals never did.
