Avem trei triunghiuri dreptunghice în această figură . Unul cu vârful în jos cu baza sau cateta mică egală cu 9 cm, unul cu vârful în sus cu cateta mai mare egală cu 6 cm și cu baza sau cateta mai mică egală cu y , aceiași și la celălalt triunghi cu vârful în sus. Cateta mai mare a triunghiului dreptunghic cu vârful în jos este egală cu 12 cm , acesta având laturile egale cu multiplul de 3 a numerelor pitagoreice 3, 4, 5. Deci înălțimea sau cateta mai mare a triunghiului dreptunghic cu vârful în sus este egală cu 12cm+ 6 cm= 18 cm. Triunghiul dreptunghic cu vârful în jos este asemenea cu cel mic, deci se poate scrie următoarea proporție: 9/y= 12/6 ,de unde y = 9/2 Deci aria sau suprafața x = (18× 9/2)/2- (6× 9/2)/2 =( 18 ×9) / 4 - ( 6× 9) / 4= 9/4× 12= 9× 3= 27 cm pătrați.
