I love how so many people ignore that depression literally stops you from doing those things. People don’t choose to not do things while being depressed, they can’t.

This is perfect logic for a person who has never been depressed. But the reason you are in bed when you are depressed is because you are physically exhausted by it.. the thought of having to even shower feels like work.. so this is not the solution.. unfortunately.

He missed the point. Depressed people are not stupid (in fact depression is correlated with intelligence). They know "doing a thing" is better than "not doing a thing". This is not a knowledge issue. It's an energy issue. Due to how a depressed mind works, it makes the person UTTERRLY EXHAUSTED. The exhaustion builds up gradually, because the things that used to replenish you mentally are no longer effective. You no longer enjoy them and they can even become more depressing ("I used to enjoy this..."/"I used to be good at that.." etc.). To "do a thing" you have to muster up the energy. It almost feels like a physical wall.

Even for things like suicide, you have to have energy. This is why we have to be careful when starting people on antidepressants. As their mental state is getting better, and the exhaustion getting lower, there is a spot where they are very likely to commit suicide - where the depression is still bad but now they're active enough to go through with it. NOTE: This is not meant to make you avoid antidepressants, they're useful. They just have to be used right and in combination with other methods that prevent/negate the risks and make them more effective.

Let’s assume he is not taking g about clinical depression. Let’s assume it is your average I am sad depressed. Lost a job, girlfriend or boyfriend etc. he is saying you need to change your state. Heard this before. Remember we are seeing this short without context of what was said before or after.

That’s a very easy opinion to have. However, you DO feel better being comforted while depressed. Your whole body might be cold and you know you’d just fuck up whatever you wanted to do that day anyway. I think it happened more to me when I was severely lacking in testosterone.
