As a nurse I can attest this is a VERY common thing. It isn't actually from the saline itself. The saline is only the mode of transportation for what you are tasting. The taste is actually from the plastic syringe it is in. As the saline quickly goes through you circulatory system and primarily into your lungs. The tiny bit of biproduct that broke down into the saline or IV is then picked up and excreted. Not to be confused with microplastics. These particles are more of a nonsolid biproduct of the plastic just like drinking water out of an old plastic cup vs a glass cup. It's harmless but annoying.

As a medical persons , the explanation is that plastic chemicals from the bottle or syringe are in the saline, then in your blood stream, even from your eye , your body breathes out the plastic chemicals and some people can tast it. And its really cool.

Healthcare worker here! Fun fact, with injecting saline into a vein, the reason why you can "taste it", is because it's traveling through your blood stream to your lungs, evaporates and then you smell the saline evaporation. You are essentially reverse smoking it.

Imagine getting it every six weeks. You taste it in the eye bc the eyes, nose and throat are connected. Intravenously, you taste it bc you are breathing it out.

Hank Green covered this in a video. Often it’s because what’s put into your bloodstream is released into the lungs where it is then breathed out with water vapor and you taste it on the way out.

I don't think that it's exactly going like in the Hank Green's video - bloodstream => lungs => taste, but the tear ducts just connect directly to the nose cavity. That's why you often get stuffy and/or runny nose when you cry - some of the tears end up in the nose

Cancer (diagnosed at 7, relapse at 14, and stable now at 24) made me essentially grow up in the hospital, and anytime I got my port or veins accessed I always tasted saline. I always said saline tastes like the smell of canned green beans that were accidentally left on the counter overnight.

So on tasting IV saline - because it’s Directly into your vein, it goes through your lungs, and as you exhale, a bit of it evaporates into your breath, leading to you tasting it in the back of your mouth
