I asked to go back to my maiden name and was denied after my divorce by the AH judge. It is more expensive than you think to change a name. The judge just saw $$ for the court for me paying for it instead of just granting it as part of the divorce agreement. I couldn't and still can't afford it on my fixed income. I also have a son by my ex so it ended up easier to keep my ex's name in the long run due to school and medical paperwork for my son. I am still stuck with his name after 13 years being divorced. It could have been a situation like mine and not her being obsessed with him. ๐ If it is still her legal last name they would have automatically given it to the baby

This comment section is insane. Is there NO reason to keep the name? Really? Not the professional complications of changing your name. Not needing to change everything for social security, banking, medical records. Issues with an abusive family associated with their maiden name. You people want women to take a mans name for years of her life and discard it as if all of that life she lived under that name meant nothing? To steal her identity as if the failed marriage wasn't punishment enough? If you have an issue with sharing your name for life, then don't tie that life to someone else's. She owns that name just as much as he does. Why? Because he consented to that possibility the day that he bet on forever.

Nnooo the op is not over reacting. Imagine if he wanted to get remarried how is the new partner supposed to feel about children that don't belong to him being giving his lastname after they divorced? That's really fucked up. She had absolutely no reason to keep her ex husband's lastname let alone give the last name to her new child. Absolutely none.

Okay, so I get that things OP has a problem with people thinking that the kid is his, but he's overreacting. It takes a lot of time and money to change your name, and it's not crazy to keep your ex's last name (if you've had kids with them), but I don't know why the OP ex wife kept the last name but OP definitely didn't have to go that far and blow up at OPs ex

I mean she kept the surname, if OP had an issue with it, he should've addressed it then. It doesn't seem like the kid's father is in the picture, is she supposed to give the kid some random name just to protect OP's feelings?
