I really advise wearing gloves when working with your tomato plants!!!! That green sticky goo can lead to the development of a worsening allergic reaction over time. I work as a graduate student in a tomato genetics research lab. One of the former phd students had to leave their field work after developing an allergy like this. It started with a contact allergy that irritated their skin, then eventually that irritation led to blistering rashes, and eventually being around the plants started to affect their breathing by the end of their phd. They still work in agriculture, just on the business side, indoors.

They are also part of the nightshade family and there stems and leaves can make some ppl skin itchy or have an allergic reaction. They do this to me but I just wear long sleeves and wash up well after.

My aunt showed me a trick to get rid of the greenish sticky stuff on the hands after picking tomatoes. You need to open a tomato and “wash” your hands with the inside of it so u need to rub it all over your hands. After that your hands are so clean u don’t believe!

You're absolutely right. The best tomato I ever had was a beefsteak that grew in my own garden. The difference between that store bought was night and day. I had no idea they could taste that good. And tomatoes are easy but maybe that's because I'm in Eastern Pennsylvania.

My dad and his brother were farmers in the San Joaquin Valley in California. Mostly tomatoes and grapes but also peaches, plums and nectarines. People that have only had store bought tomatoes have no idea what fresh tomatoes taste like. I miss it and I want to learn to grow my own. Also whoever reads this don’t put tomatoes in the fridge! It changes the flavor in a bad way.

I understand this. They’re not my favourite plant. But they are my favourite thing to grow because they’re mostly low maintenance & produce tomatoes! My season is coming to an end I’m about to chop all mine back and I’m bummed

Jess from Roots and Refuge says that store bought tomatoes taste like disappointment. I must agree.

I love how they smell. Tomatoes on the vine smell is my childhood in a nutshell. Reminds me of the big beautiful garden my dad had next door to a Harley Davidson showroom shop.

All of the reasons you gave are my favorite things about growing them 😂 (except for them being pre-madonnas)!

Do you add lemon when you can them?

😱 I love everything you hate about growing tomatoes! 😂 So far, I hate growing strawberries and garlic, because I get really excited, and get terrible luck with them 😅 My strawberry plant survived the winter, so maybe I'll finally have a lucky year!

When more than one seed starts, do you trim off most to let one survive or do you separate them out?

If you've never tried them, Cherokee purple tomatoes are unbelievable good, but they have NO SHELF LIFE. Once you pick them you have 1-2 days to eat them. Best tasting tomatoes EVER!

I've never preferred the flavor or texture of home versus store tomato, but I also don't enjoy growing tomatoes. They're a lot of work for what I get out of them where I live. I would LOVE to make my own sauce and salsa, but no matter how many plants I grow or buy or seeds I start, there's not enough for all of that. One of my least favorites to grow.
