This is so unfortunately true. My dad REFUSED to call a plumber when our kitchen sink started having problems, so he got under the sink, spent 10 hours cursing and crying, begging for it to function, and 4 trips to Home Depot later: the cold water was coming from the hot side, and vice versa, oh and the gutter was broken.
