Cocoon chronicles the true story of a group of teenage girls and their teachers who served their country during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. At the center is the evolving bond between San and Mayu, a friendship that carries subtle romantic undertones. The girls are misled by their government, told that Japan would triumph in Okinawa and that they would remain safe. Initially, their duties involve building shelters, camouflaging positions, and operating watchtowers while they continue their studies in the sun-soaked, tropical landscape of coastal Okinawa.
A key element of their education is the life cycle of silkworms—silk cocoons symbolize maturation and transformation, a motif that threads through the film. The girls’ orderly routine is violently upended when they are ordered to become nurses. San greets this new role with a mix of excitement and expectation of tending wounded soldiers in a humane hospital, but the reality is far harsher: they are sent to sea caves at the frontlines.
War exposes the girls to brutal conditions—malnutrition, disease, relentless Allied bombing—and to the risk of sexual assault faced by some. San transports herself into a fantasy world, obsessively focused on the silkworm’s journey from cocoon to moth, a coping mechanism for the horrors around her. Mayu becomes her cocoon, offering protection from the nightmare she sees unfolding. Fully indoctrinated by Imperial Japan, the girls clamor for patriotism, even as San’s doubts about their purpose begin to mount.
As American forces advance, the military abandons them, directing a treacherous return to base through the war’s collapsing frontlines. Starved and exhausted, the girls confront life-and-death choices as many perish or choose suicide rather than surrender. Throughout, San grapples with questions about loyalty, sacrifice, and the meaning of patriotism.
