The Philippines was a great U.S. territorial expansion too, although temporarily. The offer of the Baja Peninsula by Mexico, declined by the U.S., was a wasted chance for U.S. territorial expansion. Almost half of the Columbia Territory was ceded to the U.S. for free, without any threat of war by the U.S. if Britain refused. When the U.S. planned to annex part of Mexico, they planned to take much more land than they actually did. The Gadsden Purchase of what became parts of Arizona and New Mexico was great, but the original plan was to purchase over half of what remained of Mexico after the war. But the U.S. refused the full request, because the President at the time worried that the would-be new States would all support the South and not the Union. What was the Liberia territory in Africa, declared independence because they were dissatisfied that as a territory, they were not getting the same help in economics as the States were. The Marshall Islands were granted independence after the nuclear fallout from the a bomb test on Bikini Atoll. During World War 2, the U.S. treated Britain's Newfoundland more like a U.S. State. Boris Johnson once proposed that the UK join the U.S. The U.S. once took temporary control of Haiti and Dominican Republic. The U.S. helped Cuba gain independence from the Spanish Empire, but of course decided not to keep it. The U.S. helped Mexico separate from Spain too. Canada has ceded a few square miles of land that included Fort Montgomery to the U.S., because the U.S. wanted it, but it was mistakenly built in Canada during the war. Although the U.S. let Cuba gain independence, the U.S. has ever since kept the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. So the U.S. actually shares a border with three countries. Former President Trump offered to purchase Greenland for $1 trillion. But of course- the offer was declined. Many Facebook users I'm Alberta post their reasons in Facebook Groups why Alberta should join the U.S. Same with many Facebook users in Quebec. After the Crimea war, many Ukrainians protested that Ukraine join the U.S. Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and later Barrack Obama, each offered USSR/Russia $2 trillion, in exchange for Siberia. Of course both offers were declined.
