Recycling is a scam. Most of the recycled products dont actually make it into new bottles, they are just shipped off to china where they are thrown into a landfill or dumped into the ocean. The world is actually a sad place. a new study shows that recycling is actually a scam and most bottles arent even recycled. Plastic recycling has never been good and has never worked, its always been cheaper to make new plastic bottles than it is to make old plastic bottles into new ones.

Mostly because it's cheaper to just make new plastic products than recycling, if I remember correctly.

You can recycle plastic bottles yourself actually. If you cut the tops off of them and strip the plastic into thin lines you can run it through a 3D printers heating element to make filament that you can then later use for 3D prints.

No way! In Germany they definitely get recycled, or at least like 70% of them. Also you don't just put them in a trash can with ♻️ on it if you want to recycle them, you put them in a machine where you get 25 cents back per bottle, so it gives you motivation to return every bottle.

Bottles can be recycled the issue is that the tops and the wrapper are made from a diffrent kind of plastic which complicates the recycling process. It's not like metal where all the impurities just float to the surface.

Speaking of which do recycle metal though, that works well.

Uh- i didn't know where you got that info but my parents have recycling business and all the plastic bottles is turn back into little pieces of plastic which will be used to make new plastic in lower quality..

Doesn't stop me from putting it in the same bucket as the trash.

I'm studying polymer science and I can tell you that bottles definitely can and are being recycled. Recycled plastic is often cheaper than fresh plastic, from a manufacturer's standpoint. The thing is, the more time a given piece of plastic is recycled, the worse its properties become. It melts easier, it's not as durable, it might even break down.

Point is, we can't keep recycling the same piece of plastic forever.

There are just a few little and mostly unknown companies that actually recycle those bottles. Sadly the bigger companies don’t do that. 😔

I'm glad somebody is actually talking about this, also if you wanna be environmentally conscious try to reuse more than you recycle, I usually only buy propel sports drink bottles or ones like that cause they are pretty sturdy plastic and when I finish it I take it home and refill it with water (from a filtered pitcher) that way I've got clean filtered and cold water ready to go in the fridge and I buy less bottles as a result as well.

That may be the case in the US but i visited 2 plants in Europe (plastic bottle recycle plant in NL & plastic bottle downcycle plant in BE) The NL plant slices the bottles to small slivers which get melted into granulate for new plastic products , where the BE plant makes them into the basic ingredients for Food trays , Fleece textiles & home insulation.

This is true , but mainly because it’s not financially worth it to recycle and yes true companies have been lying for years. It’s best to reduce our need for plastics

Spent 35 year's in the Plastic Ind , the chemical make up of plastics degrades after being recycled . The next time you try to try to recycle it degrades even more , so after a couple of times it's no long good to use and must be thrown out .

Please be specific. Plastic recycling is a lie, but not other materials like paper, cardboard, and metals.

I worked in a plastic recycling warehouse we'd mostly be recycling scraps from plastic products every now and than we'd get miss printed signs or out of date signs. Mostly scraps or mess ups no bottles
