Of course it was the next evolution of the Borchardt pistol. The 7.63mm Borchardt round (identical in dimensions to the stronger Mauser round) was also shortened to make the 7.65mm Luger.

Even after over a century, this creation of Georg Luger is still the most elegant sidearm ever issued to a military force. It's beautiful, graceful and in my opinion the best handling pistol I have ever fired. It seems to point itself. The way it fits in the hand is perfect. I have one I acquired when I was in high school in the 1960s. I have handled many sidearm, but the Luger tops them all for handling.
