Ok so what you do is cut the damaged area flat. Then you use wood glue to attach a small piece of wood to the cut area. After the glue has set you use a sharp chisel or contractors knife and some sandpaper to shape and smooth the new block to fit the shape of the rest of the base. Then you get some wood stain and color match the base color. Easy fix that sounds hard but really isn't.
