I love how these shorts are about the most random and unrelated topics possible

Now do a second one on the game so you get to use the exact same title and create confusion

Man the second I see The Binding of Isaac I immediately think of the popular 2011 roguelike created by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl!

Hey J.J., I've really been enjoying these scattershot micro-lectures; I'd imagine that if I weren't from the West they'd be really illuminating. Here's a couple topic ideas: Fur trappers/mountain men, Alfred Hitchcock, Fidel Castro, Fire Department lore and iconography, the Titanic. Keep it up pal!

It's also worth mentioning that in Islam the story has Ishmael (Anraham's other son) subbed in for Issac, and Muslims also have a holiday (Eid Al-Adha) commemorating this event

A version of this is also the reason Muslims sacrifice animals like cattle, sheep and goats on Eid-ul-Adha. It says that, at the last second, Allah gave Abraham a lamb to slaughter in the place of Isaac. In commemoration, Muslims around the world honour Abraham's willingness to follow God's command and emulate the sacrifice.

I love these cultural literacy shorts. My girlfriend is Chinese and has no context for any of these. So the shorts help her understand western culture a bit more. Very cool!

As someone who's not Christan but lives in the west I do think I'm missing out on a lot. Much of western literature and movies takes a large amount of their themes from their bible so sometimes I feel like I don't fully understand the meaning of the media. Thank you for tid bit.

Imagine the scenario, your dad almost kills you and then heā€™s like ā€žOh, ok, back to our lifeā€™s. No hard feelings.ā€œ

I learned this both in elementary school and sunday school. Like most people in Paraguay I was raised catholic, and as a kid I had to learn every story and characters from the bible, with my favorite always being Samson because he was like a shonen protagonist.

What a lot of people donā€™t realize is that Isaac was a grown man when this happened, or at least grown enough to carry the wood up the mountain and build an alter big enough for human immolation, which is quite big indeed. That means he must have been a willing sacrifice, since he could easily have run or fought but instead submitted. It wasnā€™t just Abraham but Isaac as well who proved his faith.

Isaac and his mother lived alone in a small house on a hill. Isaac kept to himself - drawing pictures and playing with his toys as his mom watched Christian broadcasts on the television. Life was simple and they were both happy. That was, until the day Isaac's mom heard a voice from above. "Your son has become corrupted by sin. He needs to be saved." "I will do my best to save him, my Lord," Isaac's mother replied, rushing into Isaac's room, removing all that was evil from his life. Again, the voice called to her. "Isaac's soul is still corrupt. He needs to be cut off from all that is evil in this world and confess his sins." "I will follow your instructions, Lord. I have faith in Thee," Isaac's mother replied, as she locked Isaac in his room away from the evils of the world. One last time, Isaac's mom heard the voice of God calling to her. "You've done as I've asked, but I still question your devotion to Me. To prove your faith, I will ask one more thing of you." "Yes, Lord. Anything," Isaac's mother begged. "To prove your love and devotion, I require a sacrifice. Your son, Isaac, will be this sacrifice. Go into his room and end his life, as an offering to Me to prove you love Me above all else." "Yes, Lord," she replied, grabbing a butcher's knife from the kitchen. Isaac, watching through a crack in his door, trembled in fear. Scrambling around his room to find a hiding place, he noticed a trapdoor to the basement, hidden under his rug. Without hesitation, he flung open the hatch, just as his mother burst through his door, and threw himself down into the unknown depths below.

An important thing to note is that in the story, before Abraham goes up the mountain to sacrifice Isaac, he tells his servants that both he and Isaac will return back down the mountain after the fact. This implies Abraham had some knowledge that Isaac would either not die or not remain dead.

Also despite the way it's often depicted in paintings, Isaac was not a little boy. Abraham was old and not able bodied to carry the wood up the mountain. Isaac was precious to him in no small part because he was conceived when Abraham and Sarah were already old. Isaac was able bodied enough to carry all the wood himself, and thus likely a young man in his 20s or 30s, so he was not violently overpowered but willingly bound. The story describes the sacrifice not only as an act of the father but of the son also.
