Mike Piazza was not the last pick in the 1988 draft. There were 75 rounds back then and you could stop drafting players in any round u want. He was the Dodgers last selection in the 62 round but the draft went on to 75 rounds.
The NYY were the only team to take a player in the 74th and 75th round but alot of teams still took players in the 63rd round.

I live in Bakersfield, CA and back during this time when I was a kid we had the Dodgers Single A team here. We called em the B Dodgers. I saw every single one of these guys come up through there it was so cool. Raul Mondesi was the most impressive dude I could watch him throw a baseball over and over!

Fun fact on streaks of 5... The Dodgers are the only team to run out 5 straight Cy Young winners.

Unfortunately the streak is broken in two spots- once by Maddux as a Cub, before he came over to Atlanta, and then by Pedro, but 6 out of 8, and if they'd gotten Maddux a year earlier it would have been 7 out of 8 with a 6 year run. Of course, LA's run was more impressive because MLB only gave one Cy Young, not one for each league, for the first 4 years of that 5 year run.
Arizona had a 4 year run, all on the back of Randy Johnson.
In the AL Baltimore managed to win half the AL Cy Youngs in the 70s. Only Toronto managed two win 3 in a row in the AL, with Pat Hentgen, and two Roger Clemens wins.
