People call VII a clone of A New Hope like it's this big blanket complaint they can use to snuff out all of the good parts of this movie.
I do not give a shit that it follows a lot of similar beats to ANH, it's still a different movie and is an incredibly exciting one at that.
The similar beats even work to its advantage sometimes. Han Solo's death is a brilliant recontextualization of Obi-Wan's death that hits way harder.
Han is trying to save his son and show him unconditional love, but it is only met with this hesitant but brutal betrayal. Kylo is so clearly conflicted, and it makes it hit so much harder. This scene gets expanded on in VIII & IX.
Obi-Wan's death is honestly just confusing and underwhelming (bro didn't even realize he died at first lol). Han's death is shocking and heartbreaking.
So I don't really care about all these parallels as if they're inherently bad just because they're there. Sometimes the episode IV version is better (Death Star/Starkiller Base), and sometimes the episode VII is better (what I mentioned).
Regardless there's also just a ton of shit in this movie that is completely original and has no parallels. What is the Kylo/Rey/Finn duel at the end taken from?
