NASA’s Voyager 1, the most distant human-made object, recently reconnected with Earth using a backup transmitter last used in 1981. This legendary spacecraft, over 15 billion miles away, showcased remarkable resilience by autonomously switching systems. Discover how the Deep Space Network restored communication, allowing Voyager to continue sending data from interstellar space. Join us to learn about the significance of Voyager 1’s achievements and what this means for future space exploration.

The people who designed it, the people who made the parts for it, and the ones that physically put it together , should be very proud of their accomplishment.

Many decades and billions of miles of travel and never hit by any other object in space...space is frighteningly big.

As a child of the 1950 UK where we still had rationing until 1952 this rings bells. Nothing was thrown out until beyond repair. Mum made jams and pickles for winter. Made most of our clothes which were handed down the family. Dad mended our shoes, he had an iron last. The cobbler sold soles and heels, glue and nails. Dad also grew veg on his alotment along with other dads and granddads. Bacon a bit green (no fridges) cook it well. Mince beef beginning to smell a bit iffy. Cook it well and add curry powder. Milk gone sour? Make cream cheese. Etc. Make do and mend was the rule. Good to see it still works.

I think the fact that it’s older simpler technology is a large reason as to why it’s still running. People always talk about how amazing it would be with today’s technology but in reality I doubt it would have lasted this long

I can't help but smile whenever I hear news about the Voyager spacecraft. So far from our planet but still communicating. Amazing engineering.

This is amazing. The two Voyagers are now in interstellar space and still talking to us. When you consider they were launched around 50 years ago and where technology was at 50 years ago, they are absolutely INCREDIBLE. I only hope that one of the Space programs will send a new one out there using the very latest technology.. Who knows what we might learn. Both Voyagers are wonderful.

At 15 bn miles away, one way signal takes about 23 hrs.
Those involved in the Voyager project are amazing.

Its wild how the tech from back then is still holding strong.
Imagine if we built one and sent it out now, how much longer it could possibly last too. Space is wild

Much more simple than today. I think that plays a major role in reconnecting also!

I can remember when these were launched. I had a fantasy back then and I STILL have it today that one of these would be built and launched again, fly out for 50 years, then turn back and come back home. I don’t know what value it would be other than we could do it and it would return and go into the Smithsonian, but I still think it would be so cool.
