Artorias did lose his fight to Manus. But he saved Siff with his greatshield and his ring that just so happened to protect him from the abyss. He was given an impossible goal. He was also never going to come back out even if he succeeded in beating Manus since he forged a contract with the Abyss Beast so he could traverse the abyss. All on Gywn's order. Artorias fought until he was broken, and finally until his soul was shattered.
even after being corrupted by the Abyss he STILL fought against it. He could have left Siff to the abyss and he may have gotten out but he chose to stay behind and give a wolf a chance to escape. Being a Artorias fan is completely valid.

Despite failing in his mission Artorias still went hard. The player fights him when he's a shell of his former self with his dominant arm broken and he still had mad hands. Even where he knew his chances of failure were high he still walked the path. I can't help but admire that.

Yup , they returned to the farron keep and found it completely destroyed, and so they decided that linking the fire again as cinder was not worth it . Some of them became corrupted by the abiss and for that they fight themselves until we arrive.

Pretty sure the Abyss Watchers were only corrupted by the Abyss… after rising from the ashes as a Lord of Cinder.
They did what they could and succeeded for the most part, with some falling to the abyss over time. But when they linked the flame their order lost purpose and went hollow… and their home fell into disrepair and became corrupted by the abyss. So when they rose… they fell into eternal combat with all they used to be.

If youre gonna do ds3, i recommend a vid or two on the profraned capital, since its so similar to elden ring (bunch of underground oracle witches[nox/numen] try to create a lord[first flame] and end up nuking the citizens with fire[crucible] and create finger monsters inadvertently)
That and ds2s giants story, where the queen makes the king(godfrey) take the magic of the giants, to create his own capital, and make the capital of the world.
