I want to build a Human-size Hobbit house with a passive solar patio out back, a geothermal radiant floor heating/cooling system, electricity provided by a microhydro power plant (with a solar and wind power "orchard" for backup), and a well and rainwater catchment system combo.

Yes, but this type is only for very rich people (so, very few) and that doesnt touche even a nail. Affordable house to build and to heat are diyable with loadbearing (so few wood is needed) strawbale house like Paillourtes design, coated with clay by a friend team.

We used to sell houses with the same energy recovery system in the 90s outside of Leipzig ( knauthain) back then the university of kassel (- prof. Hausladen) monitored how much the system saved under real living conditions.
