Ergot removal is not painful to the horse. Nerves are located closer to the skin, but not within the ergot.
A ergot is a hard,calloused, keratinized group of skin cells. They are normal, benign, non painful growths on the back of the fetlocks of a horse (lower leg). The ergot serves as an anchoring point to the associated ergot ligament, attaching to the lower pastern. It is also considered that the ergot serves to guide water away from the heel, similar to the function of the feathers. It's a normal, benign growth that continues to grow throughout the horse's life. Even when trimmed, it will grow back. Ergots are unique to each horse. Some horses grow tiny ergots that rarely need trimming, while others grow much faster & larger ergots.
