My personal headcannon is that she was so confident that all of them sucked so bad that none of them could string the bow and if one of them managed it she would want to die... And if it was really her Odysseus he wouldn't shoot at her in the first place

It's a really cool headcannon! But just to clarify to anyone that sees you saying this while holding a copy of the odyssey, this does not happen in cannon (both in the odyssey and in epic). I mean, the suitors can see where they're shooting lol

My understanding of the line was always a subtle call to Odysseus, who she suspects may be there: "Hey, I'm making this plan to buy you time. When you know what you're doing, go forward with it, no matter the risk. I'd rather die than grow old without you specifically (the best of the Greeks and of men)." But the suitors hear, "I'd rather die than grow old without a man with the best of my old husband's talent (archery)." That said, I love the imagery and interpretation with her on the other side of the axes as well, symbolically and artistically it's beautiful and tragic.

This honestly makes so much sense and has some interesting/sad symbolism because in The Odyssey, in book 19 or 20, I think, Penelope prays to Artemis to grant her a quick death with her arrows so she won't have to marry the suitors since she is starting to lose hope that Odysseus will return

I imagine that when she saw Antinuous start rallying the other suitors, she wisely fled to her room and barricaded herself in. Telemachus may have even gotten home by that point and decided to grab some weapons, which is when he would've discovered the suitors' weapons. Idk, just spitballing ideas.
