My head cannon is that when Odysseus comes, he was hiding BEHIND the throne and shot Antinious in the throat by AIMING THROUGH THE AXES.

And she follows it up with "I'll be here, waiting"

The same thing Anticlea sang right before she...

Don't forget in the tale not even their son could string his bow. She knew that only Odysseus could string it, only he could let loose an arrow with such perscison that it would not harm her. She knew what she was doing.

In the Odyssey, Odysseus pretends to be a beggar and strings the bow and does the challenge, then he shoots everyone with Telemachus

My personal headcannon is that she was so confident that all of them sucked so bad that none of them could string the bow and if one of them managed it she would want to die... And if it was really her Odysseus he wouldn't shoot at her in the first place

It's a really cool headcannon! But just to clarify to anyone that sees you saying this while holding a copy of the odyssey, this does not happen in cannon (both in the odyssey and in epic). I mean, the suitors can see where they're shooting lol

My understanding of the line was always a subtle call to Odysseus, who she suspects may be there: "Hey, I'm making this plan to buy you time. When you know what you're doing, go forward with it, no matter the risk. I'd rather die than grow old without you specifically (the best of the Greeks and of men)." But the suitors hear, "I'd rather die than grow old without a man with the best of my old husband's talent (archery)." That said, I love the imagery and interpretation with her on the other side of the axes as well, symbolically and artistically it's beautiful and tragic.

This honestly makes so much sense and has some interesting/sad symbolism because in The Odyssey, in book 19 or 20, I think, Penelope prays to Artemis to grant her a quick death with her arrows so she won't have to marry the suitors since she is starting to lose hope that Odysseus will return

Dudes, its honestly such an easy detail to miss. But holy shit thats a huge detail. She was not taking anyone else, but Odysseus

I imagine that when she saw Antinuous start rallying the other suitors, she wisely fled to her room and barricaded herself in. Telemachus may have even gotten home by that point and decided to grab some weapons, which is when he would've discovered the suitors' weapons. Idk, just spitballing ideas.

Well in this song she retreats to her chambers after the challenge is issued.

Also.... behind the axes like behind a row of axes lined up infront of her, I assume not behind like where arrows are landing, because that's just dumb. But ig nobody could even string the bow so its not like she risked getting shot

Penelope: I will sacrifice myself for my husband
Odysseus: I will sacrifice myself for my wife
THESE TWO ARE RELATIONSHIP GOALS
Now I'll never find the Odysseus to my Penelope. Yay.
