Revisiting this landmark SCOTUS case that changed trademark law forever!
***
Asian rock band "The Slants" wanted to trademark their name, but the U.S. Patent Office rejected their application, calling the name "disparaging."
The Slants fought the case all the way to the Supreme Court, which sided with the band. The court said that banning disparaging trademarks violated the First Amendment. For better or worse, this one case opened the floodgates for a new set of words and phrases to be trademarked.
