Very convenient that you can't get a good raise unless you have a score of 5 but they never give anyone a 5. That's gaslighting 101.

I once got a 3.5 on a review for attendance. I had perfect attendance, never late and worked on average about 7 hours a week OT. I said how the hell can I do any better????!!!!! She straight faced said we can always do better. From then on out I used every sick day I was given yearly and still got a 3.5. They decide what they want to give you raise wise and then fudge their numbers to fit.

I worked for a company for 16 years. About 2 years in, they started doing almost this identical scenario. The first 2 years after they started, which would put me in year 3 and 4 I did my best because i was trying to get the 5 star, when the fourth year came and i did not get the highest raise and I was told the same thing. Nobody gets the highest raise I then stopped trying. I then stopped giving extra time when it was needed. And I only did the work that was required. And I still got the same pay raise. Eventually I wound up quitting

Yep, Both HR and Management are working against YOUR best interests so why should employees be loyal?

I had a job make us rate outselves. I always said everything was a 5. When they asked why, I asked what motivation would I have to make it less. They stopped asking after that.

I once worked for a top-100 company that (1) never gave out 5s, (2) I scored a 4, and then (3) fired everyone who scored a 3 because they only met their requirements only to discover that this was their operators and janitorial staff. Management were insanely stupid.

You reach for your 5 outside of the company. That's what you use your paid time off for -- getting your raise.

This manager is full of shit if you can never get a 5% raise. What is the point, if it's not obtainable.

"Actually, the cost of living has gone down, so really, I should reduce your salary."

It’s called moving the goalposts. The “meets expectations “ should be enough to be employed and get a cost of living raise. Or a bonus.

The “exceeds expectations “ is not even described. Therefore it doesn’t exist.

The “above exceeds expectations “ is some kind of cruel joke. A madness.

I wish they would do better editing because they keep cutting it off at the wrong place

I don’t even discuss it. I ask what my raise and where do I sign. People spend hours on discussing and arguing over something that was completed weeks ago and that has little chance of changing. If you not making the money you want shop that resume and don’t look back

so going above and beyond you'll get a mediocre score doing mediocre work will get you a mediocre score where's the incentive to go above and beyond
