I agree with those saying this is not the time to keep quiet. Popes are in a unique position to lead and speak up for the poor and marginalized. Newman was an academic and great thinker but the Pope, as a world leader, cannot be just a quiet philosopher

The Church as a whole carries the good news. The priests and evangelists carry the good news. The pope is not supposed to be everything. "To some he gave as evangelists, some teachers, some pastors, etc". The purpose of pope is to be the final voice, the final say on disputes, and the Shepards of Shepards. A sure pillar and successor to Peter. He can certainly do that being "quiet". That doesn't mean invisible and not in the public eye, but just that he's not doing everything all the time.

Yes, Somewhat true. Let us remember that three popes let the vatican bank and finances continue and "live". Same with the children abuses that the church let things go. No decisive action. Sometimes you need someone to come and take charge and fix some of the problems and not just let things go and continue.
