I decided to commemorate the memories of my babushka (grandmother). She talked about her life in the Soviet Union during and after WW2, and what they ate during big hunger in the country.

Eli, sit and listen to your grandmothers' stories. Grandparents are not around forever. You will never have the opportunity to hear these stories again before they are lost forever. I loved listening to my great-grandmother's stories. Now I have no grandparents left and I miss those stories. Your grandmother lived through some very hard times, the Russian probably more than a lot of other people. I would love to hear more of her stories. Let her know we appreciate her memories.

Thank you for this! It’s so important to hear stories from our elders. There’s much hidden about our world and the ones that remember are passing on.

My german grandma told me similar stories. They ate nettle, gras and potato peels which they bagged for. She was herding cattle in winter without shoes so she was happy to stand in the fresh cow dung to keep warm. For Christmas they shared 2 pigeons with a family of 5. May we learn from this experience and never let that happen again! Mir y drushba!❤

Older generation are satisfied with whatever they own. Family bonding, love, affection and humble people with honesty and generosity. But the present scenario is entirely different. So sad.

Life was really hard during WW2 in Russia. I really admire your grandmother and her resiliency, to make do with very little in order to survive, Eli Millions of Russians died during WW2. Lots of Russians grew up without fathers. Its very sad.

These stories are always touching and no one had it easy at that time. Even my grandfather, who lived through that period, used to tell us grandchildren how difficult it was to live in that situation and how they managed to survive by gathering food in the countryside like wild herbs.
You should listen to your grandmother a lot more because you can learn a lot from her stories, and I perceived from this story what I no longer perceive or hear from my grandfather's stories: the depth of feelings due to having lived a life of suffering that moulds and shapes you, making you stronger, capable of facing any adversity in life. And your grandmother is the image and the exact example of this.
You should not only listen to her stories and transcribe them, you should also learn all that she knows how to do because it is precisely in her knowledge that is the great legacy she can leave you.
