Tomorrow (Sunday, 21 Jan) we mark the solemn occasion of the 80th anniversary, commemorating the sacrifice of 324 fallen heroes who valiantly fought against the Japanese forces that had occupied North Borneo, now known as Sabah, during World War II. On October 9, 1943, the Kinabalu Guerrillas initiated the Double Tenth Revolt, launching an audacious attack against the Japanese army. Unfortunately, in the aftermath of the uprising, 176 members were apprehended and subsequently executed by the Japanese on 21 January 1944, at the present-day site of Petagas Memorial Garden.

About 16 percent (estimated) of the population of Sabah was killed during three years of Japanese occupation. Every year on January 21, there's a memorial service at Petagas Memorial Garden to remember the brave Sabah warriors and to remind us of the cruelty of wars.
