I was familiar with gendered variations in the sign BEST-FRIEND (R from lips tending more feminine vs in the air being less so) but had never seen the GHOST distinction! Thanks for teaching! ๐ŸคŸ

huh, I remember asking my asl professor how some signs use pointer vs middle finger (I've seen "PREFER/FAVORITE" signed with either tapping middle finger OR pointer finger) but I did not know there were gendered connotations/origins with these!

Does ASL have gender-neutral they? I know it takes a lot of grammar from French, which is messed up with that stuff. Like in French if you have a group of women, you use a feminine pronoun, but then if you have a single man in that group of women you use the male version for all of them. I would hope ASL isn't like that but languages can be weird

might be a stupid question but when signing "ghost" in a masculine or feminine way, is that like, girl ghost vs boy ghost or is it in the sense of the person signing is using a girly or manly tone of "voice"? i just want to make sure

Hello ๐Ÿ‘‹ ASL 2 student from Texas here :D Ive been watching your vids for a while now, and I just wanted to ask what dialect you use?
Itโ€™s actually shockingly different from what Iโ€™ve been taught (teacher is a very skilled and well known ASL interpreter)
Like, Ive never seen parents signed on the cheek before! Very cool ๐Ÿ‘ (Our version for parents, siblings, grandparents, ect is to bounce between chin and forehead EX: DADโ€”MOM or vice versa) ((except the sign for cousin for some reason????? that oneโ€™s signed on the cheek and i have NO CLUE why))
Anyways, itโ€™s very cool to see all the variations ASL can hav

OK that's weird but interesting. I've never understood why language development genders for words that clearly don't have genders like say a chair.

Okay this might be a weird question to ask, but you speak very well for a deaf person did you lose your hearing later in life or did you just have a good vocal coach?

Does that mean that the sign โ€œf offโ€ is feminine? Or not because itโ€™s under the chin?

I hate gendered language. Im glad there are some signs you can ungender, but i wish all of them worked that way. I dont want to use the masc or femme version of ghost. Id rather make my own version thats neither, but people can still understand.

I wish everything had a genderless version. It would make life so much easier.

I'm so glad to learn the non-gendered versions of a couple words!

I'm gonna be honest: The obvious misogyny of male gendering indicating the mind aka intelligence and the women's the mouth aka gossip or being too talkative gives me the creeps even when I use them but use them I have because what else was I supposed to do?

I love learning from you, but I do not understand why anyone would be excited about this. Yes this is a me problem and I'm aware of that.

But again I truly am grateful that there are a few things with a non gendered version. I'm new at this and I had been considering quitting. Spoken languages are bad enough with this stuff, but the visuals of signing make it impossible for me to just forget about the apparent sexism in most gendered signs
