This is why we need autistic people doing autism assessments. Neurotypical people infantilize people with autism or they treat us like we’re dumb. I don’t want someone without my experience telling me how to feel and that what I have makes me bad.
Self diagnosis is valid, don’t let people who don’t know your head tell you what’s wrong with you.💛

My brother requires high support, and he absolutely hates the toy nonsense. I find it gross the way some places, doctors, and parents keep trying to infantilize us.
My brother watches the same films and listens to the same music that a lot of people his age do, so why treat him like he's 5? He's in his late twenties 🙄

I feel terrible for those who've gone through assessments like this bc they do actually happen. My autism assessment was absolutely wonderful. Both girls who did it were understanding of me being almost an adult at the time and apologized for the childish questions and activities that they usually used on children but they had to do them on me because I was 17 not 18. Shout out to Come Play STL

The biggest issue is that most assessments are made for children. Even the questionnairs are made for all ages (7 and up). The RAADS that's most commonly used by medical professionals, has many flaws. The autistic person is expected to fill it in on their own and get no help at all understanding the questions. I take them literally so questions like "do you get extremely upset..." no, I get very upset. Thus 0 points on that question. Which has so far led to me getting so low a score that I'd be considered textbook neurotypical.
Last time I did it I had help from a friend in the field, she explained the questions and what they meant with them. I got a high score.

i got my diagnosis (of asbergers, if that gives an idea of anything) from a general psych evaluation when i was around twelve (12), in which i just did puzzles. the main (and only) one i remember was matching up these two colored blocks with the patterns in a book. i think the eval was based on how i went about creating the shape and how long it took me to do it, but that already was with the knowledge of my adhd and a history of autism with my mom.
i'm saying this to show just how lucky i was that i didn't go in specifically for an autism diagnosis. if i had, i probably would have been misdiagnosed because i'm afab and mask generally well. i am so lucky, and i am so sorry for people who cannot be diagnosed because of doctors who think/act like this. remember that self diagnosis is valid and should be considered in medical situations. stay safe ♡
(i am aware that this video is a joke. i just wanted to give my perspective on the situation that it is joking about.)
