I read Justin Martyr's letter to the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, from early 2nd century describing how early Christians 'spent' their Sundays together, and what they did during the gathering. It was the same structure as the Catholic Mass today.
Even before the bible was compiled, they had the writings (epistles) of the apostles or their memoirs read, followed by exhortation/homily to live by those words they read earlier, then the breaking of bread and distribution of it, even to those who could not attend because they're sick and at home, the deacons would bring the bread to them. And they believed the real presence of Jesus in the bread.
