I work at Home Depot and my store never got rid of any Echo gas products just brought in more battery products. We now have Dewalt gas mowers and some stores have new Echo gas mowers. The reason everything is locked up is because bad customers can’t be trusted to not walk away with everything not locked up.

They brought back gas because, the cost of 1 battery is a higher cost than all the gas you would use in 10 years for your trimmer

They brought them back because most people who want gas powered equipment were going to local power equipment shop and buying from them. It’s all about the money.

The cages are really Home Depot's way saying that they assume the customer is a criminal and thief- basically slowing down 1% of them while 99% have to deal with massive inconvenience in very understaffed stores.
Gotta say that I personally slowed a lot of my home wiring projects down because I don't want to have to deal with their personnel...like waiting 20 minutes.. just to buy a coil of wire.

I got an old Echo SRM2400 for free. Fixed it by far the best trimmer Ive had. Ive had Stihl and Husqvarna trimmers. My Echo is gray so I know its pretty old.

It’s pretty aggravating that steel cages are needed. Maybe if the criminals are kept in their steel cages we wouldn’t need everything locked up. I’m 48, and even I miss the good old days. Never saw this 30 years ago.
