There are two types of bunions, a fifth toe protrusion called a tailor’s bunion and a first toe protrusion called Hallux Abducto Valgus.

Bunions are not simply growths of bone at the side of the foot, they are rotations of the bones. The 1st metatarsal and 1st phalangeal bones rotate, excessively stressing the ligaments surrounding the joint.

If the joint has enlarged physically then it most likely means that arthritis and bone spurs are present inside the joint.

There are several factors that contribute to bunion development, such as:

- Genetic or inherited

- Ligament laxity, if your joints are very loose.

- Biomechanical faults, such as flat foot

- Wearing high heels. This will alter the forces on your feet.

Bunions are progressive, they will start small and progress into great protrusions that in the end may be painful and restricted in movement. This end-stage is arthritis or Hallux Rigidus as the joints wear out unevenly causing the cartilage to deteriorate.

A proper diagnosis is essential to know why the bunion developed and why there may be pain in the bunion.

Many soft correcting devices such as bunion splints and shoes won’t help to straighten the toe and over time make the bunion worse.

There are very good conservative treatment options that Podiatrists do and there are very good surgical corrective options that Orthopaedic doctors can help with.

Having a bunion doesn’t mean you must change your entire lifestyle or image, but it does mean that you should address it before it progresses over time.
