I had purebred Rottweilers from a good breeder. They were great dogs, easily trained but not too smart. My other dogs were a Shepherd Lab Mix, a Rottweiler Blue healer mix and to day I have an 8 month old Shepherd Pit mix. I call him a Zwazighund because there are actually 20 different breeds in his DNA. He's the smartest dog I have had next to an Indian Street dog I rescued when I lived in Bangalore.

I appreciate this. I know someone whose good intentions of rescuing mystery mutt street puppies ended up with them getting dogs they couldn't handle. Both dogs developed serious behavioral issues in their teen years and were scheduled for an early grave. I only managed to save one; my now 10-year-old soulmate. I told them not to get another mystery mutt because they clearly aren't capable of dealing with the challenges that they might provide. Both of these pups were intelligent and extremely high-energy, both would have made great dogs as adults with right training.
My aunt's Karelian beardog mix was my first touch to large dogs and while she was a reactive puller when I started to walk and train her, when she learned to be calmer, she became the fiercest protector of the 13-year-old me. What a wonderful, gentle giant - and a real escape artist too! Made me want to get myself a giant dog now, as an adult.

I understand where you’re coming from Will, but I’ve seen the horror of puppy mills and bad breeding. Recently the Humane Society posted a recent issue with the AKC spending masses amount of money to stop Puppy Protection Act & Better CARE for Animals Act-both Witten to have stricter rules on breeding. My personal opinion is dogs don’t selectively choose what breed they want to maye with….humans, as usual, like to take control. I’d love to hear more on your take. Thank you as always for such great work.

got a mix from Rumania, and no idea what he is, but the independence is a big problem for normal training and dog life, but otherwise i was SUPER lucky, MANY of the other people who adopted with the same batch of dogs had years of reactivity issues, but that might just be the owners being the problem.

I’ve got a corso/ collie rescue, he’s a great dog in the home. But on walks he’s a nightmare.partly trained, but unfortunately I can’t see him playing in the local river with the other dogs. Walks are a nightmare at the moment, but trying different dog walking equipment and trying different techniques. He has got better, but still has far to go.

I just want to say that not all mixed breed dogs are healthy dogs. Many people believe that they have better genetics than all purebred dog which is simply not the case. A good friend of mine has a 2 year old staffy mix and she have very bad hip displacement and she can barely walk. The poor thing just had a hip replacement at only 2 years old. Just be careful if your adopting a mix breed dog, there not free of health issues.

I’ve had 3 mixed breed dogs and two of them were rescues . All three had health issues when they got to age 10 . I took them to get their senior wellness exams every 6 months . Bloodwork etc . Two of them passed from cancer . Toby age 12 from hemangiosarcoma . And Batman age 11 from three different types of cancer . I thought I did everything for them and they still got sick. The vet told me it could have been genetic. Ruby is 13 and has been relatively healthy until recently .
Every person I’ve met with a pure bred dog hasn’t really had to deal with cancer or major medical issues .

Yeah, in my experience, mixbreeds were always the most intelligent dogs I've met, to the exception of Border Collies. They are just on another level.
