Imagine not knowing calculus so hard you invent calculus

They teach so much stuff in med school, doctor had to delete calculus from their brain to make up room

Reinventing the trapezoidal rule is totally different (and much easier) than reinventing calculus

This is how all those Babylonian and Chinese mathematicians felt when Pythagoras named the Pythagorean theorem after himself.

If 547 people cited it I canā€™t laugh at her its a larger issue now šŸ˜‚

It's interesting. Knowing Enough math to get the sum notation correct in your paper, but not enough to know the method.

I think it's admirable. Integral calculus has been invented independently at least 3 times (Newton, Leibniz, Tai). It's obviously funny this slipped through the peer review process and got published, but props to her for coming up with it on her own, if she did indeed do that

Plot Twist: Newton and other fellas time travelled to the year 1994 and stole the Taiā€™s model and labeled as Calculus a thousand years before her birthā€¦

This is common. The ignorance of math and physics in the medical community is often ubiquitous.

I donā€™t know whatā€™s crazier: tai refusing to acknowledge she messed up, or papers tryin to act fancy by referring to finding area using ā€˜tai modelā€™

If you're afraid of getting scooped one day, this is a reminder that you can still publish results established 2000 years ago and get 500+ citations for it.

I was in physics graduate school and this paper was one of the reasons we'd joke that premed students failing algebra physics was "savings lives through physics"

Yes we were that obnoxious

The worst part for me isnā€™t that they ā€œrediscoveredā€ calculus, or that they were unaware of its existence, or even that people cited them without realizing a solution already existed. What really gets me is that weā€™ve had precise methods to calculate the area under a curve for ages now XD

All I know is that if I ever need to use the trapezoid rule in a publication, Iā€™m citing this paper

Blud just reinvented Riemann sums šŸ’€

Reminds me of the time last year where I derived quotient rule from product and chain rule
