I wasted my breath!! A year ago, a early 20's guy rushes past me @local soirting goods store. 'Xcuse me!! he said, reaching for some .308/priced @ 49.99/51.99."Let me guess" I said. "You just got a new gun, and you wanna sight in a scope/break in your new rifle??" Yeah, he replied, I need @least 10 boxes, according to Utube"(200 rounds). "Just for plinking/break-in, here are some Lake City 7.62x51. Priced @14.99/box. They are what I used when I bought when I got my .308." "Are you sure? Are they interchangeable? Will they fit?" I assured him that they would. He thanked me, loaded his cart, and disappeared around the corner, headed for check-out. I turned back towards counter/mirror, and saw him peek back around corner, return 7.62x51 to shelf, grab 10 boxes of .308( 49.99-51.99/ box) then dashed to check-out!! I wasted my breath!!π

While case wall thickness have little impact on compatibility, the slightly different headspace requirements can be a concern in some cases. Due to this and the difference in chamber pressures, many consider .308 Winchester to be unsafe to fire in 7.62x51mm firearms... particularly older rifles that may not benefit from modern metallurgical advancements and may not have been designed with .308 Winchester in mind.

They run the same pressure. Max 62k for both.
Both fully supported at the shoulder, 7.62 has a longer jump to the lands to relieve the pressure from sustain fire. Go/ no go head space gauge works on both chambers.
7.62 has more materials to make it stronger but that means less case capacity. Which means you can get a compressed load if you're not careful.
Your information is wrong, military used a different spot to measure and different unit of measurement. Once they moved to a transducer. Physics is the same you cannot exceed 62,000 on both and average load is around 54,000 on both with reloaders not being counted.
