A European robotic arm, called the Sample Transfer Arm (STA), is a key part of the Mars Sample Return mission. This 2.5-meter-long robot will pick up tubes filled with precious Martian soil and transfer them to a rocket for a historic interplanetary delivery.
The Sample Transfer Arm is designed to be autonomous, reliable, and sturdy. It can move in many ways with seven degrees of freedom, using two cameras and various sensors. With a gripper similar to a hand, it can handle the sample tubes from different angles.
This robotic arm will land on Mars to collect the tubes that NASA's Perseverance rover is gathering. With the ability to "see," "feel," and make decisions on its own, the arm can extract tubes from the rover, pick them up from the Martian surface, put them in a container, close the lid, and then lift off from Mars.
